Excursions and hiking in Rila Mountain:

Castle Tsarska Bistrica
We would like to recommend a visit to Castle Tsarska Bistrica, only a 10 minutes walk from the centre of Borovetz. The castle was built from 1898 to 1914 while Knyaz Ferdinand was ruling Bulgaria. The building demonstrates an original interpretation of the Renaissance architecture, influenced by the traditional European style. You'll discover richly wood-carved ceilings, fireplaces made of lovely glazed and decorative tiles and a collection of hunting trophies of the tsar’s family, collected for more that fifty years. At Tsarska Bistrica there is also a chapel, as well as small power station (built in 1912) with a Siemens turbine continuing to generate electricity.

Chernata Skala (Black Rock)

Anyone who likes dramatic views and the beauty of nature must not miss this classical route. A gently sloping 4,5 km long path leads you up to the 100-meter balcony of the rock. The view below is really dramatic - on the left is the Maritsa River valley, on the right - the land of Dolna Banya, with Mousala Peak rising above at 2925 meters! Below the peak (at 2709 meters) the sun rays reflect the surface of Ledenoto ezero (Ice Lake).

Maliovitsa Peak (2729 meters)

This majestic peak is in the northwest part of Rila and is a preferred destination for mountain tourism. The highest alpine walls and Bulgaria's most challenging climbing are found in this part of Rila. The peak can be climbed on foot for about 3 hours.

The Seven Rila Lakes
The Seven Rila Lakes is an amazing scenic complex of seven lakes in Bulgaria, located in Northwest Rila and situated at small plateaus. The first 3 are surrounded by magnificent meadows with mountain flowers, groves with dwarf pine and juniper, and the highes are surrounded by large rocks. The names of the lakes (from top to bottom) are: Salzata (The Tear), Okoto (The Eye), Babreka (The Kidney), Bliznaka (The Twin), Botanicheskoto (The Botanical), Ribnoto (The Fish) and Dolnoto (The Down).

Mousala Peak (2925 m)

Mousala Peak is the highest peak on the Balkan peninsula found in Eastern Rila. At the summit the average annual temperature is 3,1 Celsius, and snow cover holds for 8 months. The name originates from Turkish and means "the way to God", but its original name is Tangra. The first written proof of climbing the peak is traced to Tsar Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Mousala Peak is a preferred destination for alpine tourism and can be climbed in about 4 hours. Take the cabin lift from Borovetz to Yastrebetz (2250 m) and then the marked path passing by Mousala Rest House up to the top.

Eco-paths
Enjoy the natural beauty of Northern Rila! The list of rare birds and plants is long and you'll sense immediately this is a special place. Take a birdwalk and unique flowers will beckon you as each step takes you deeper into this natural paradise. The botanical path leads to the Urdina River valley with its new eco-path built over the village of Beli Iskar. Picking of flowers is forbidden but you can taste the forrest strawberries or any other wild fruits and mushrooms. A mountain guide's assistance is provided to bear watching locations. Northern Rila is one of few places in our country where the brown bear lives in its natural environment. You'll also spot wild animal tracks such as wolf, deer, roe and wild goat and hear the song of the wood grouse. Enjoy the views carved by prehistoric geological activity and discover the beauty of numeous alpine lakes, sharp peaks and high mountain valleys!

Rila Monastery

Rila Monastery is the largest monastery complex in Bulgaria and one of the most spectacular of the Balkan peninsula. It is located approximately 1100 m above sea level in the northwest part of Rila. Founded in the tenth century by the Bulgarian monk Saint Ivan Rilski, the complex was demolished several times but always rebuilt. It currently occupies approximately 8800 sqare meters and in the four-story residental section there are over 400 rooms, including 4 chapels, guest rooms for worshippers, and a  monastery kitchen (called magernitsa) with original constriction. You'll se remarkable original frescos painted in the nineteenth century by masters from Bansco and Samokov. Valuable Bulgarian treasures of written documents are kept in the monastery, including 250 books from the eleventh to nineteenth century, 9000 early printed books, original handwriting and Renaissance period graphical works. In 1983 Rila Monastery was included in the list of Natural and Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.
